Short-Term Medical Insurance

Between jobs? Aging off a parent’s plan? Waiting for Open Enrollment?
A Short-Term Medical (STM) plan may be a flexible solution for temporary coverage needs.

Short-Term Medical plans allow you to choose how much coverage you want and how long you need it, with options available for individuals and families.

Many plans also include additional perks such as telemedicine access and discount programs on everyday services and products through a LIFE Association membership (availability varies by state).

Plan Flexibility & Options

Short-Term Medical plans are designed with flexibility in mind, including:

  • Coverage terms ranging from 30 days up to 12 months (some plans may offer renewal or consecutive term options depending on state regulations)

  • Benefits that may include doctor office visits and urgent care services, with select plans offering prescription coverage

  • A wide range of deductibles and coinsurance options, allowing you to tailor coverage to your budget

  • Access to large national provider networks such as Aetna Open Choice® or Cigna networks, helping you find care where you need it

Important Information

These plans provide limited benefits.

Short-Term Medical insurance is not required to comply with the federal Affordable Care Act (ACA) standards. Because of this, coverage may be more limited than ACA-compliant plans.

Important considerations include:

  • Coverage may exclude or limit pre-existing conditions

  • Benefits such as maternity, preventive care, mental health, substance use treatment, hospitalization, and prescription drugs may be limited or not covered depending on the plan

  • If coverage ends or eligibility changes, you may need to wait for an Open Enrollment period to obtain ACA coverage

  • These plans are not considered qualifying coverage under ACA standards, which may impact future enrollment in other health insurance options
